My guess is that there are lots of vintage Univox guitars out there that sound bad (or have no sound at all) because of this flaw in the design.

It basically creates a resistance to ground that translates into a weak muddy tone similar to what you'd get if you turned the volume pot down. UNIVOX guitars were imported to North America from Japan in the late 1960’s to the late 1970’s. Since the mesh is comprised of such fine wires, the ability of the mesh to conduct current becomes effected. Also the wiring connecting the control pots to theĪnyway what happens over decades of time is that the mesh wire corrodes/oxidizes/tarnishes. Just the hot lead and the fine mesh surrounding it connecting the pickup to the control pots.
There was no dedicated thicker wire for ground running along with the pickup lead. The way the pickups were wired, they had a single hot wire and only the wire mesh which acts as the shield running from the pickup to the control knobs.
